TwinCAT HMI is a development environment for web-based HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces). This meta package ensures compatibility between the Beckhoff.TwinCAT.HMI.EcDiagnostics extension package and client packages, such as Beckhoff.TwinCAT.HMI.EcDiagnosticsControl.

The extension is not provided by this meta package itself, but by a dependency to a compatible version of the extension package within this meta package. Compatibility here refers to the symbol API of the dependent extension, i.e. the symbols and their parameters and return values provided by the extension. Changes to the symbol API of the dependent extension are represented by the version number of this meta package, since the version number of the dependent extension package already represents the version number of the server API (C++ or .NET) used by the extension, which is not directly relevant for clients, such as controls. Clients using an extension should therefore always reference the corresponding meta package with the same major number, instead of directly referencing the extension package, to ensure compatibility when updating packages.
