Overview

This tool is designed to generate PlantUML class diagrams from C# source code. Leveraging SourceGenerator functionality, it analyzes the source code and produces PlantUML class diagrams.

Usage

1. Installing the NuGet Package

Retrieve the PlantUmlClassDiagramGenerator.SourceGenerator package from NuGet Gallery and install it into your .NET project.

2. Editing the Project File

2.1 Including "GENERATE_PLANTUML" in Conditional Compilation Symbols

This tool operates only when the preprocessor symbol "GENERATE_PLANTUML" is defined. The tool does not need to run constantly during coding; running it once when necessary is sufficient. Therefore, it is set up to operate only during specific build configurations. Add "GENERATE_PLANTUML" to the conditional compilation symbols of your project build configurations.

To configure the tool to run during release builds, add the following section to your .csproj file:

3. Setting Attribute Values

Set attribute values for types and their members as needed.

3.1 PlantUmlDiagramAttribute

You can apply this attribute to assembly and type definitions (such as classes, structures, interfaces, and enumerations). Types that have this attribute will be included in the class diagram output. If applied to an assembly, it includes all types defined within that assembly.

3.2 PlantUmlIgnoreAttribute

If you define the PlantUmlDiagramAttribute at the assembly level, all types defined within that assembly will be included in the class diagram output. However, if you want to exclude specific types from the output, you can apply the PlantUmlIgnoreAttribute to those types.

3.3 PlantUmlAssociationAttribute

This attribute is used to annotate members or method parameters to create custom associations. The properties below specify the details of the association to be created. Here, the type to which the attribute is attached is referred to as the "Root Type," and the type associated with it is referred to as the "Leaf Type."

Specify additional types to be targeted for association. In this tool, the following conditions determine which types are targeted for association:

  • Types that are output targets within the project.
  • Types for which a .puml file exists in the output folder.

1. Output of UML Files

Under the directory specified by PlantUmlGenerator_OutputDir, folders named after the "Assembly Name" will be created, and within each of these folders, folders named after the "Namespace" will be created.

As each association is added, the !include directive is also added to reference the definitions of associated types.

If the same directory is specified in the project setting PlantUmlGenerator_OutputDir, files from other projects will be included following the folder structure rules, even if they are from different projects.
