Humble Login Screen for Umbraco

Brand the backoffice login screen from the backoffice.

The Umbraco sign-in page is the first thing anyone sees of your build, and changing it normally means editing appsettings.json, committing paths, and redeploying. This package moves that job into the backoffice, where the person who owns the branding actually works.

  • Pick imagery from the Media section. Background and both logos are chosen with the standard media picker. Nothing is uploaded, copied, or duplicated — the package stores a reference to the media item you already own.
  • Recolour or remove the curves. Umbraco draws two decorative curves over the background image. Turn them off, or set them to a brand colour.
  • No restart. Saved settings apply to the next load of the sign-in page.
  • Nothing written to disk. Works unchanged on read-only filesystems, in containers, and with remote blob storage.
  • Permission-gated. A granular user-group permission controls who may change the design.

Install

dotnet add package Humble.Umbraco.LoginScreen

Login Screen is bundled in the Humble.Umbraco suite package, so skip that command if you already installed the suite. On an Umbraco 17 site, pin the major with --version "17.*".

No startup code and no template changes — the package composes itself on boot.

Use

Settings → Humble → Login Screen.

Three image slots, all optional. Leaving one empty keeps Umbraco's default, or whatever you already set in appsettings.json.

Slot Where it appears
Background image The panel beside the sign-in form. Hidden on windows narrower than 900px.
Logo Top-left, over the background image, on windows wider than 900px.
Logo (narrow windows) Below 900px, where the background image is hidden and the logo sits on the plain page background.

The two logo slots are not a light/dark pair — the sign-in page has no dark mode. They exist because the logo sits on your image at full width and on a plain background when the window is narrow, and those two surfaces usually need different contrast.

Permissions

The package adds a Modify login screen design permission under the Humble heading in Users → User Groups → Permissions. Administrators always have it; any other group can be granted it without being made an administrator.

Configuration

There is nothing to add to appsettings.json — the design is stored in the database and edited in the backoffice.

Umbraco's own login settings under Umbraco:CMS:Content still apply. An empty slot falls through to your configured value, and if a chosen media item ever becomes unreadable the package falls back to that same value rather than a hardcoded default.
